    1. Dineo Setsetse: A Trailblazer for Soweto Tourism

    Dineo Setsetse

One of the most prominent women in Gauteng’s tourism industry is Dineo Setsetse, the General Manager of the Soweto Hotel & Conference Centre. Setsetse’s career has been nothing short of transformative, especially her work in revitalising Soweto’s tourism sector. Under Setsetse’s leadership, the Soweto Hotel, a historic landmark in Walter Sisulu Square, has experienced tremendous growth.

Leading Growth at the Soweto Hotel & Conference Centre

Setsetse joined the Soweto Hotel when it was facing significant challenges, including operating under the Protea and Holiday Inn franchises. Over time, she successfully rebranded the property, positioning it as a premier township destination. Despite setbacks like the financial burden caused by load-shedding, Setsetse’s leadership ensured the hotel remained operational and competitive.

Her dedication to sustainable growth didn’t stop with rebranding. Setsetse collaborated with local SMMEs, travel agencies, and tour operators, creating new tourism packages that attracted more visitors to Soweto. By doing so, she injected new life into the local economy and helped uplift the community.

    Achievements and Impact

Under Setsetse’s leadership, the Soweto Hotel has become a beacon of success in South African tourism. Notable achievements include:

    • Rebranding the Soweto Hotel and positioning it as a destination for both local and international visitors.
    • Securing over R500,000 in bookings at Africa’s Travel Indaba 2023.
    • Forming valuable partnerships with government bodies and local businesses to support tourism recovery and growth.

As a passionate advocate for women in the hospitality industry, Setsetse also strives to empower fellow female entrepreneurs. Her work continues to inspire other women in Gauteng to take leadership roles in tourism.

Also known by her stage name Nomisupasta, Nomsa Mazwai is another influential woman in Gauteng. A talented singer-songwriter, poet, and social activist from Soweto, Mazwai has used her voice to create social change and amplify women’s voices.

Music, Art, and Activism: A Powerful Combination

Mazwai’s multifaceted career has spanned music, poetry, theatre, and activism. Her music combines personal poetry and social commentary, earning recognition for her contribution to South African culture. Mazwai’s debut album won the South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best African Alternative Album in 2011, and she has since released several albums that have further cemented her as a dynamic live performer.

However, Mazwai’s influence goes beyond music. She is a vocal advocate for women’s rights and safety, launching several initiatives aimed at creating safer communities. One such initiative is #FunkItImWalking, which aims to make public spaces safer for women. Through this campaign, Mazwai has led monthly safety walks through Soweto, encouraging residents to take ownership of their community’s safety while fostering local economic growth.

    Empowering Women in Tourism

In addition to her activism, Mazwai has also made strides in tourism development. Recognising the potential of Soweto’s tourism industry, she launched Soweto Night Out – a night-time walking tour experience designed to keep tourists in the township after dark. This initiative highlights Soweto’s rich culture and empowers local women entrepreneurs by supporting small businesses and township tourism.

Mazwai’s creative vision continues to inspire women across Gauteng to leverage their talents and skills to empower themselves and their communities.
